Groundbreaking Honors Bob Ontiveros’ Legacy
and the Future of Education in Moline
Moline, IL - On March 25, 2026, students, educators, community leaders and families gathered in Moline to celebrate the groundbreaking of Robert Ontiveros Elementary School, a milestone that honors the legacy of Group O founder Bob Ontiveros while investing in the next generation of learners.
Located at 1015 16th Avenue in Moline at the current Lincoln-Irving school site, the new K–5 school will consolidate Lincoln-Irving and Willard elementary schools into a modern, student-centered facility designed to support growth, collaboration and academic success. The project includes a 61,000-square-foot addition and a 32,000-square-foot renovation, expanding capacity from 365 to approximately 600 students. The school is scheduled to open in August 2027.
Designed by Legat Architects (see their rendering to the right) and built by Estes Construction, the facility emphasizes a welcoming, home-like environment with natural materials, earth-tone colors, a raised “porch” gathering space, and classroom entrances that resemble home entryways. A central cultural tree and learning stair reflect the diverse families and communities the school serves.
The school’s name and its Owls mascot were selected through a community-driven process involving students, families, staff and the district’s N.E.S.T. (Naming the Elementary School Together) committee, underscoring the project’s collaborative spirit.
The school honors Robert “Bob” Ontiveros, a Moline native, entrepreneur, philanthropist and community leader whose life exemplified perseverance, integrity and service. Bob founded Group O and was a strong advocate for education and opportunity throughout the Quad Cities. His impact continues through decades of community investment, mentorship and support for local organizations.
Members of the Ontiveros family including Bob’s sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were present for the ceremony. Bob’s son, Chris Ontiveros, spoke about the significance of naming a school after his father, emphasizing Bob’s belief in education, character, and community as foundations for lifelong success.
