Mobile Phone Usability Testing
Group O works with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to fine tune new mobile devices before they reach the market. As part of our quality assurance inspections, Group O performs a variety of mobile device testing to verify proper functionality.
Functional mobile device testing is part of Group O’s non-destructive testing and is designed to replicate the end user’s experience as they use their mobile device. The functional testing also serves to validate original performance specifications set by individual OEMs and carriers. Below is a breakdown of the various functional tests our operators perform on mobile devices to ensure each device meets original performance specifications.
Visual Inspections
First, mobile devices are inspected by trained operators in Group O’s testing facility. Operators look for obvious cosmetic discrepancies or imperfections on the mobile device’s surfaces. Imperfections include scratches, dents, improperly placed logos, or other cosmetic defects that would render the mobile device as unequipped for commercial sale.
Speakers
Operators then test the mobile device’s speakers. In this test, operators are verifying that the mobile device is functioning properly to ensure that the end user will receive a standard mobile device.
Camera
Operators then use the camera to validate that the mobile device’s lenses are functioning properly. To do this, Group O’s expert operators take a picture of a color wheel to ensure all colors are displayed at the correct saturation levels on the mobile device. This will ensure that, when the device goes to market, end users will receive a properly functioning product.
Microphone
The microphone is tested next by using voice command features to verify proper functionality. Operators may give a spoken command to the mobile device to test the device’s ability to pick up sounds and understand basic cues.
Light Sensors
The mobile device’s light sensors are then tested to ensure they are functioning properly as well. Light sensors detect light in a mobile device user’s environment. Sensors can detect when the light is brighter or dimmer and then adjust its display screen accordingly for the best end user experience.
Diagnostic Tool
After testing the above components on each mobile device, operators use an innovative diagnostic tool to compare each device to a factory stock image. The factory stock images can be used for comparisons to further validate the mobile device is functioning properly and is on par with the factory model.
In addition, an online global database checks for any discrepancies or variations in the mobile device. In the case of a remanufactured device, the diagnostic tool also helps identify any previous owner’s private information, ransomware, adware, malware, and OEM battery status. This process ensures that the end user will receive a secure and functioning mobile device.
Be Prepared for Your Users' Experience
The functional testing phase for all mobile devices is designed to mimic the end user’s experience. This stage of quality testing is an important part of the entire mobile device lifecycle. Group O performs mobile device testing on millions of devices each year to ensure each carrier’s and OEM’s standards are met.
