Cannabis Packaging Tips

How is cannabis packaged? The cannabis market is on the rise. As of the writing of this article, 37 states allow medical use and 21 states allow recreational use, other states are sure to follow in the near future.

With the increased demand for cannabis, medical or recreational, the need for packaging will be at an all time high. Cannabis comes in various forms, from flower and oils to edibles and wax – each can be packaged differently.

Packaging maintains the freshness of a product and provides information for consumers. Not to mention, it is also a valuable opportunity for branding and marketing. In order to keep up with competition, we compiled a list of popular packaging solutions recommended for the different forms of cannabis.

Flowers and Leaves

When packaging cannabis in the form of flowers and leaves, opting for glass jars or bottles is the most valuable choice. Glass packaging allows the product to stay fresh, because the glass won’t react to the THC chemicals within cannabis.

Additionally, consumers prefer glass packaging because it allows them to see the product before opening  – which is especially beneficial for flowers and leaves, since each strain can look different.

Wax Concentrate

When it comes to cannabis products like wax, packaging options are more limited due to the sticky nature of the product. Medical grade silicone jars and containers are the most suitable choice when packaging wax, because of silicone’s non-stick properties. Consumers will be able to easily access the wax and won’t have to worry about making a mess.

Medical grade silicone will be able to store the highest-quality of wax. Due to the medical properties, the wax will be protected from chemical leaching – which is a natural process that occurs when a solvent is detached or extracted from its carrier substance.

Pre-Rolls

Consumers often prefer to buy cannabis that is already pre-rolled for them in a cigarette-like form. For packaging pre-rolls, plastic tubes are the best fitting option, as they allow for singular packaged items. Additionally, the plastic tubes will protect the pre-rolls from being potentially damaged.

In order to open most plastic tubes, consumers will have to push down on the lid and then it should pop open, making it child-resistant. As cannabis continues to be legalized, providing child-resistant packaging will be standard and is already required in some states.

Edibles

Packaging edible cannabis products will require packaging solutions like resealable containers or bags. Resealable containers and bags will protect dried cannabis from moisture and sunlight, which preserves the product and allows it to stay fresh. These packaging solutions are also easy to label and customize.

Manufacturers will be held responsible to display the required warnings on packaged cannabis. There’s still many laws and regulations surrounding cannabis, which differ from state to state, so correctly labeling packaged cannabis is crucial.
