Easy & Healthy Tips for Eating Out

It is that time of year again when schedules get more hectic, kids are back in school and it is so easy to eat out for lunch and/or dinner.  Here are some easy tips to remember when ordering out that will help you to lose weight even when eating at your favorite restaurants:

  •  If you know the menu from the restaurant you're going to, plan what you're going to have ahead of time. This will help save you from making a last minute decision that could result in high-calorie choices.
  • Drink at least one full-glass of water or iced tea before eating your meal. This helps your digestive process, and, because you'll feel full sooner, you will eat less.
  • If you're not sure how something is prepared, don't be afraid to ask. And if the dish is cooked in oil or butter, you can always ask if they have a "fat free" option.
  • Order an appetizer and a salad as your meal. Or a soup and salad. For dessert, choose fresh fruit.
  • When choosing soup, remember that cream-based soups have many more calories than broth-based ones.  If you decide to order pasta, tomato sauce has fewer calories than cream-based sauces.
  • If you're having a full meal, split the appetizer and desert with your companion.
  • Choose breadsticks over bread, or if you eat bread, don't add butter. Stay away from muffins and croissants, and choose whole grain over white.
  • Take the time to enjoy your meal & savor the flavors and textures of your food. When you eat slowly, you give your body's internal clock the time it needs to know when you've had enough. When you're full, stop eating. Ask your server to remove your plate so you're not tempted to keep eating while you wait for your companion to finish.
  • Order salad dressings and sauces "on the side." This gives you more control of how much to use. Another tip for salad dressing -- rather than pouring the salad dressing on your salad, dip your fork into the dressing first, and then into the salad. You'll get the same amount of flavor, without all the added calories!
  • When ordering sandwiches, order them with mustard only, rather than mayonnaise. Not only does mustard have almost no calories, but you won't miss the mayo!
  • If the portion you were served is large, only eat half of it. Take the other half home. Not only will you get two meals for the price of one, but you'll cut the calories in half as well!

Reduce Your Exposure to Pesticides

Pesticides are designed and used globally to control pest nuisance/damage and have contributed to reducing disease and increasing food production worldwide. But the availability and widespread use of pesticides has also exposed us to potential (direct and indirect) unexpected health risks.  In the US alone, we use and are exposed to over 4.5 billion pounds of pesticides each year (75% commercial and 25% residential).

What can you do to minimize pesticide exposure?

  • BUY ORGANIC AND LOCALLY GROWN FRUIT AND VEGETABLES - Buying organic, in-season, produce from your local market is the best assurance of pesticide-free produce.  In addition, national surveys have shown fruits and vegetables from farmers’ markets contain fewer pesticides even if they’re not organic.

  • WASH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES BEFORE EATING - For grapes, strawberries, green beans, and leafy vegetables, swirl the foods in a diluted solution of dish detergent and water at room temperature for 5 to 10 seconds, then rinse with slightly warm water. For other fruits and vegetables, use a soft brush to scrub the food with the solution for about 5 to 10 seconds, and then rinse with slightly warm water. Commercial vegetable and fruit washing solutions are also available and are formulated to remove chemical residue from produce.

  • GROW YOUR OWN PRODUCE - A backyard garden plot as small as 400 sq. ft. can provide much of the required produce for a family of four. Utilizing organic methods can replace the need for pesticides and chemical fertilizers, and tending the garden is a healthy activity for children. Additionally, planting perennial crops like asparagus, blueberries and strawberries will provide crops for years with very little work. But take notice - even homegrown produce should be washed before eating, since pesticides are sprayed aerially in some regions of the country, and other wind-blown contaminants may reach your garden.  

  • USE NON-TOXIC METHODS FOR CONTROLLING INSECTS IN THE HOME AND GARDEN - Using chemical-based commercial insect pest control treatments may introduce chemicals into your home which pose more of a threat than the insects they are designed to kill.  There are effective, non-toxic methods for controlling insect problems in the home, which will kill a broad range of common indoor insects with little or no potential hazard to your family or pets.
